Athena Dixie-Louella Bess came by ambulance to Blank Children’s Hospital in May 2013 due to the Rhino Virus. At only 5 months old, Athena’s family found out that her visit had more in store than just the virus. Athena was also suffering from heart complications.
The Ronald McDonald House and area hospital social workers have a strong partnership. Seeing that Athena had some hurdles ahead of her, the social workers at Blank Children’s Hospital referred the Bess family to the House. Athena spent nearly two months at Blank with her mom and dad by her side.
“I love the staff here, they’re hospitable, and the warmth is so extreme. It has pretty much been home to us these last few months.”
In July 2013, Athena was admitted into the hospital again this time at Mercy Children’s Hospital, where she had heart surgery. With the help of our Ronald McDonald Family Room and the Ronald McDonald House the Bess family stayed near their daughter for 115 nights.
“She is doing a lot better through her recovery now. We really don’t know how sane we would be if it wasn’t for the sincere love of the staff here. They really have an amazing quality about themselves that is truly a revelation of their hearts. I couldn’t hope for better hands to be in at the Ronald McDonald House. They are a very sincere group of people.”
